Denied Liver Transplant Authorization, Man Sues Insurer and Wins

By Steve Lombardi

ADVERTISEMENTS

This has all the makings of the kind of drama that Hollywood loves for a script. Man needs a liver transplant, his health insurer authorizes it, but when the treating physician recommends going out-of-state to avoid delays in his home state, the insurance company withdraws authorization. He sues, wins and even gets the girl. Well I'm making the part about the girl up, but the rest is laid out in a blog post listed in the ABA Journal's blog section. It's a great read and will make an even better movie. Move over Damon, because a real-life Rainmaker script is coming your way.

The thing about insurance companies that we forget is they are corporations who focus only on the bottom line. They have no heart, no brain, no soul and absolutely no conscience. They are organizations run by a bunch of people who care about one thing, and one thing only - the bottom line. You asking for money is somewhat defeating to the goal of increasing the bottom line. CEO bonuses don't get paid out in large amounts by handing out money to insureds for claims. To increase the bottom line corporate employees have to promote the float; meaning not pay out claims so the amount of money the insurance company invests is maximized. That's why insurance company's have those feely-touchy commercials all about family, credibility and how they are there just for you.
