Challenges expected to gun restrictions in wake of Supreme Court ruling

By Richard Binder

ADVERTISEMENTS

The recent Supreme Court decision effectively removing Chicago's three-decade old ban on handguns will undoubtedly lead to legal challenges to similar restrictions in California -- at least, if CalCCW.com gets its way.

Greg Block, a Huntington Beach firearms trainer and a member of CalCCW.com, said the group will mount an attack on the restriction allowing only one handgun to be purchased in a 30-day period; the restriction limiting rounds in a magazine to 10 and the regulations allowing sheriff's and police chiefs to determine who can carry a concealed weapon.

NRA lawyers also plan to sue to challenge the rare issuing of permits for carrying concealed weapons in public in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Law enforcement officials aren't concerned.  Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, for one, doesn't see the ruling having an immediate impact on the county.  Martin Mayer, a Fullerton attorney who represents the California State Sheriff's Association and the California Police Chiefs Association, doesn't see "a major change as long as you are reasonably regulating." San Jose attorney Donald Kilmer, on the other hand, thinks gun laws are going to be given greater scrutiny.
