US CITIZENS BEING DETAINED MISTAKENLY AS UNAUTHORIZED IMMIGRANTS

Posted on February 15, 2008
Not exactly breaking news, but it's worth reminding folks about what's happening. There have also been several cases of US citizens, particularly those with mental handicaps, actually being deported as well.

HOW TO DESTROY A STATE'S ECONOMY IN JUST A FEW EASY STEPS

Posted on February 15, 2008
Lou Dobbs and friends must be cheering. After all, they've sworn up and down that there are plenty of Americans who would love to take the jobs currently being worked by the millions of unauthorized immigrants around the country. Never mind that the estimated number of unauthorized workers probably far exceeds the number of unemployed Americans qualified and interested in taking the jobs (and, no, a laid off mortgage banker is not going to pick tomatoes)...

NATIVISM'S ELECTORAL FLOP

Posted on February 15, 2008
The Washington Post discusses how anti-immigration views have failed to resonate with voters. Apparently, the anti-immigration movement may be loud and organized but that doesn't translate into votes.

CBP GOES COUNTRY

Posted on February 14, 2008
Canadian country artist Shirley Myers from here in Tennessee has made a public service announcement for the good folks at CBP. You can listen to the announcement here. And here Shirley recording it in French!

MCCAIN'S TIGHTROPE

Posted on February 14, 2008
Politico.com reports on the bind immigration presents the Republican's presumptive nominee. Can McCain keep the Republican base while also winning Hispanics?

OBAMA GETS ENDORSEMENT OF PRO-IMMIGRATION UNION

Posted on February 14, 2008
The Service Employees International Union, the upstart union known nationally for attracting Latino members in service professions, is poised to endorse Barack Obama for President. The endorsement is expected to be a major blow to the Clinton campaign which has been heavily banking on strong Hispanic support...

GOVERNOR SIGNS MICHIGAN DRIVERS LICENSE FIX

Posted on February 14, 2008
The loud protests have paid off. Pat yourselves on the back for this one.

COURT ORDERS USCIS TO STOP REQUIRING FBI NAME CHECKS PRIOR TO FINISHING NATURALIZATION CASES

Posted on February 14, 2008
Wow. On the heels of a decision last week that resulted in USCIS agreeing to adjudicate adjustment applications pending more than 180 days even if an FBI name check is not complete, a federal district court in Pennsylvania has issued an order requiring USCIS to adjudicate four naturalization cases for long delayed applications and, more importantly, to revise its regulations to address delayed naturalization cases...

NFAP'S STUART ANDERSON WEIGHS IN ON MICHIGAN DRIVERS LICENSE FIASCO

Posted on February 14, 2008
Stuart Anderson, of the National Foundation for American Policy, succinctly makes the case on how idiotic the new law is.

IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: ERNESTO BLANCO - SCIENTIST/INVENTOR

Posted on February 14, 2008
Sorry for taking a few days off from posting Immigrants of the Day. Cuban-born Ernesto Blanco entered the US in 1960 as part of the post-Castro exodus from the island nation. Blanco is a faculty member at MIT and has 13 patents for important inventions ranging from biomedical devices to solar devices to aids for the handicapped to industrial and textile systems...

GET IN MY TRUCK

Posted on February 13, 2008
Border Patrol humor from the folks at HBO's Sketch Pad 2 (thanks to my friend Tom Roach for passing this along).

SEND THE LITTLEST ONES HOME FIRST

Posted on February 13, 2008
This story in the Raleigh News and Observer would probably have not caught my attention since it was just talking about the opening of a new immigration court. But there's a passage about halfway where the subject of unaccompanied children in immigration custody is discussed...

USCIS OFFICER MAKES HOUSE CALLS FOR NATURALIZATION OATHS

Posted on February 13, 2008
Not all the news I report regarding US Citizenship and Immigration Services is bad. Here's a nice piece on a USCIS officer that travels to people's homes who are too frail or ill to be able to attend a regular oath ceremony. I've had clients over the years that are not too different from the folks interviewed in the story and it's really great to see this more human side of USCIS.

BABY DIES IN CBP CUSTODY

Posted on February 13, 2008
Unbelievable.

SOUTHSOURCING

Posted on February 13, 2008
I posted Stephen Colbert's hilarious coining of this term a few months back. But companies simply moving their operations to Mexico (where, as Colbert notes, there is unlimited access to Mexicans), is no joke. Markets have a way of winning out when government's try and limit trade and immigration...

NPR COVERS THE MICHIGAN DRIVERS LICENSE FIASCO

MORE ON HOUSE REVIVING IMMIGRATION BILL

Posted on February 13, 2008
Congress Daily has a story this morning on how talk of bringing back immigration reform legislation is making Republicans and some immigration advocates nervous. Immigration advocates are concerned that the compromises being discussed (including trading off a path to citizenship for a five year non-immigrant work visa) are too severe...

HOUSE HOLDS HEARING ON VISAS FOR FOREIGN SCHOLARS AND STUDENTS

Posted on February 13, 2008
The Subcommittee on Research and Science Education of the House Committee on Science and Technology held hearings last week on visa problems facing foreign students and scholars. The witness testimony is now posted on the Subcommittee's web site.

HOUSE DEMS TO PUSH FOR SCALED BACK IMMIGRATION REFORM

Posted on February 12, 2008
Apparently, House Democrats are thinking along the same lines as I wrote a few days back and will move forward with immigration reform this year rather than waiting until after the election as many had assumed. For more on the logic of this move, see my post from last week...

EB-3 NUMBERS JUMP THREE YEARS

Posted on February 12, 2008
The March Visa Bulletin has been released and there's good news for people in the EB-3 category. Those with priority dates after January 1, 2005 can now complete processing, a jump of three years. Why is this happening? Here's the DOS explanation: The cut-off date movement for March in several Employment categories has been greater than those experienced in recent months...

MICHAEL MAGGIO: 1947-2008

Posted on February 11, 2008
Michael Maggio, one of America's top immigration lawyers, died yesterday of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma at the age of 60. Maggio rose to prominence in the 1970s when he worked in Washington to oppose the Chilean dictatorship. Over the years, Michael worked with several refugee and human rights organizations and won numerous court victories in the field...

WILL MICHIGAN DRIVERS LICENSE LAW DRIVE OUT DOCTORS?

Posted on February 10, 2008
The President of the Michigan State Medical Society is concerned that a new law that limits drivers licenses to green card holders and citizens will cause many MDs to look at locating in other states.

JEWISH PRESS OUTLET COVERS OLBERMANN SLAMMING OF DOBBS

Posted on February 08, 2008
This item from the Jewish Telegraphic Agency will likely run in hundreds of Jewish newspapers around the country over the next few days and will hopefully keep the pressure on CNN to deal with Dobbs' nightly nativist rantings.

OLBERMANN: DOBBS' ADL REMARK EARNS HIM WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD AWARD

Posted on February 08, 2008
When will CNN end this misery and send Mr. Dobbs packing? Here's another link.

NAVARETTE: ANTIS ARE LOUD, WEAK

Posted on February 08, 2008
San Diego Union Tribune Columnist Rubin Navarette, Jr. writes about how the anti-immigration wing of the GOP has proven to be much weaker than anyone expected.

MICHIGAN APPROVES DRIVERS LICENSE FIX

Posted on February 08, 2008
Maybe Michigan legislators were reading my blog and decided economic suicide might not go over well with voters. So they have approved legislation that allows most people in legal status to get drivers licenses and not just citizens and green card holders...

AMY WINEHOUSE, ETC.

Posted on February 08, 2008
Some of you have noted that I've not posted on Amy Winehouse. I actually have, but on a separate blog I write on fashion, arts and sports immigration. In fact, it's part of a portal I have on my web site on the subject that is one of the most comprehensive sources of information on this topic anywhere, either online or in print.

IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: JAN STENERUD - NFL HALL OF FAME MEMBER

Posted on February 08, 2008
So just how did all these foreign players end up kickers and punters in the NFL? Norwegian-born Jan Stenerud was one of the first players to bring their soccer-style kicking skills. He came to the US as a foreign student with no intention of playing football...

JEWISH PRESS OUTLET COVERS DOBBS' SLUR AGAINST ADL

Posted on February 07, 2008
Apparently, my blog post chiding Lou Dobbs for calling the Anti-Defamation League a "joke" due to its criticism of Dobbs for cozying up to leaders of hate groups and the use of extremist rhetoric in his broadcasts has gotten the attention of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, the AP of the nation's Jewish community.

PRO-IMMIGRATION MCCAIN WILL LEAD THE GOP

Posted on February 07, 2008
In case you haven't heard, the anti-immigration card didn't deliver for Mitt Romney and he has just announced he has dropped out of the Republican race for President. While Mike Huckabee in theory could still win the nomination, the math makes it virtually impossible...
