THE FAUX WAR ON THE MIDDLE CLASS
Posted on February 07, 2008You wouldn't normally think of comedian Drew Carey as the ideal person to take on Lou Dobbs and his nightly reporting on the "War on the Middle Class." Dobbs uses this running theme to justify his rants against immigration and free trade so while Carey's video report for the Wall Street Journal does not directly mention immigration, it really tells a lot about why Dobbs is banging this particular drum.
BREAKING NEWS: COURT UPHOLDS ARIZONA EMPLOYER SANCTIONS LAW
Posted on February 07, 2008Judge Wake has upheld Arizona's employer sanctions law which allows the state to revoke business licenses and requires employers to use E-Verify. In his decision, he writes that Arizona complied with the Immigration Reform and Control Act by imposing sanctions by "licensing and similar laws" as permitted in IRCA and by referring to federal law in defining an "unauthorized alien" and determining whether an individual in lawful status (unlike other states which often have more restrictive definitions)...
A PIECE OF ADVICE FOR THE REPUBLICANS
Posted on February 07, 2008The first thing I would suggest to the GOP is to anticipate the Democrats' playing the immigration card by re-introducing reform legislation and start planning on how to flip the issue in your favor. Polls show the American public is greatly concerned about border security, but that they want Congress to look at the matter pragmatically and pass legislation that punishes unauthorized immigrants, but ultimately allows a path to normalizing their immigration status...
IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: MORTEN ANDERSEN - NFL FOOTBALL PLAYER
Posted on February 07, 2008The all-time leading scorer in NFL history is an active player for the Atlanta Falcons who is also the oldest active player in the NFL. 47 year old Danish-born Morten Andersen is old enough to be a grandfather and more than twice as old as many of his teammates...
A PIECE OF ADVICE FOR THE DEMOCRATS
Posted on February 07, 2008I've had this little idea floating around for the last few months, but dared not reveal it until McCain locked up the nomination. I think you'll understand why when you read further. John McCain is still supporting comprehensive immigration reform and just recently told Tim Russert of NBC that he believes the bill bearing his name was correct two years ago and he would vote for it if he had the opportunity today...
IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: JEAN-PHILIPPE DARCHE - NFL FOOTBALL PLAYER
Posted on February 06, 2008Jean-Philippe Darche is a French-Canadian linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs. Unlike other foreign players in the NFL, Darche went to school and started his playing career outside the US. He started playing hockey in his youth (not surprising since he's Canadian and the brother of an NHL player), but switched to football in high school in Montreal...
BREAKING NEWS: USCIS WILL ADJUDICATE DELAYED GREEN CARD CASES WITHOUT FBI NAME CHECK
Posted on February 06, 2008I've reported many times on how adjustment of status cases can be delayed for years because it is stuck in a queue waiting on a security clearance. In many cases, the only remedy that has regularly worked is taking the government to court. A reader at Immigration Voice has scooped all of the normal sources for immigration news and posted a new USCIS memorandum that allows USCIS examiners to adjudicate adjustment cases pending more than 180 days without having the name checks completed...
SNOPES.COM URBAN LEGENDS SITE ADDRESSES ANTI-IMMIGRANT EMAIL CLAIM
Posted on February 06, 2008Kudos to the folks at Snopes.com for researching and putting to bed the ridiculous claims being circulated by antis trying to get people riled up about immigration. Unfortunately, they've had to now deal with several of these.
POSNER MAKES THE CONSERVATIVE CASE FOR LEGALIZATION
Posted on February 05, 2008One of the great legal minds of our age, Judge Richard Posner (who, I should mention for full disclosure's sake, was, and still is, a professor at my law school), makes the case that mass deportation is a very, very bad idea and that the only acceptable option is, yes, an amnesty...
IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: MICHAEL ROOS - NFL PLAYER
Posted on February 05, 2008So you thought I would only be writing about kickers and punters this week, right? I'm happy to include Estonian-born Michael Roos because I'm also a long time fan of the Tennessee Titans. In fact, I've had season tickets to the Titans since their first season in Tennessee when they played in Memphis (they've been in Nashville for all but their first year) and they still went by the name the Tennessee Oilers...
MCCAIN'S ACHILLES HEEL
Posted on February 05, 2008The Arizona Republic has a story that's similar to the Wall Street Journal article I've linked below showing that the supposedly fatal problem of the McCain campaign - his unwaivering support for progressive immigration legislation - has not been so fatal after all.
POINT, COUNTERPOINT ON THE IMPACT OF ENFORCEMENT STRATEGIES
Posted on February 05, 2008The Los Angeles Times has an interesting piece in its opinion section today where immigration restrictionist Mark Krikorian is debating University of California - San Diego Professor Tomás R. Jiménez. This is the first of three of these the LA Times will be running.
CONGRATS, CRAIG!
Posted on February 05, 2008America's favorite Scottish talk show host has passed the US citizenship examination. Here's the proof.
A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO SUPER TUESDAY
Posted on February 05, 2008The Wall Street Journal reports on how today was the day that crowned the candidate who was the most anti-"amnesty" and the toughest on immigration. But the voters proved to be a lot less xenophobic and a lot more pragmatic than the candidates hoping to capitalize on stirred up nativism anticipated.
DOBBS SHOW LABELED HATE PROMOTER BY CIVIL RIGHTS GROUP
Posted on February 05, 2008Do you want to see Lou Dobbs' head explode? Watch this interview with civil rights group La Raza's President Janet Murguía who came to put Dobbs on warning that her organization is taking on a new campaign to drive hate speech from the cable news networks...
ROMNEY HIRES HAZLETON DEFENDER TO BE ADVISOR ON IMMIGRATION
Posted on February 04, 2008Just to put an exclamation point on the differences between himself and John McCain on immigration, Mitt Romney has brought on one of the leading anti-immigrant lawyers in the country to advise his campaign on immigration issues. Kris Kobach defended the city of Hazleton, Pennsylvania in their losing effort to prevent the city's harsh anti-immigration ordinance from being thrown out of court...
IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: LAWRENCE TYNES - NFL FOOTBALL PLAYER
Posted on February 04, 2008NFL week continues here following one of the greatest Super Bowls in the 42 year history of the championship game. The New York Giants won perhaps the greatest upset since the 1969 season when the Jets beat the Colts. And the Giants were helped by their place kicker Lawrence Tynes of Scotland who kicked a field goal and two extra points to help his team win 17 to 14...
IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY:GARO YEPREMIAN - NFL FOOTBALL PLAYER
Posted on February 03, 2008It's Super Bowl Sunday and a day of dread for me. You see, I grew up in Miami and from the age of four until I left for college, I went with my dad to almost every Miami Dolphins game. I was privileged to see some of the greatest teams in NFL history coached by the legendary Don Shula...
ANTI-IMMIGRATION PROVING TO BE A LOSER POSITION IN 2008
Posted on February 02, 2008The National Immigration Forum is reporting what the mainstream media seems to have missed so far - that immigration is not shaping up to be a winning issue in the 2008 presidential campaign. Most Republican voters - nearly 60% favor either a temporary legal status or complete legalization for unauthorized immigrants...
ARIZONA: ANTI-IMMIGRATION GROUND ZERO
Posted on February 02, 2008As we approach tomorrow's Super Bowl in Phoenix tomorrow, the Wall Street Journal reports on Arizona's growing reputation as the most immigrant unfriendly state in the country. While there business license and English-only laws may now only be seen as part of a larger trend, the latest effort to pass a law barring birth certificates to children born to out of status parents is the jaw dropping clincher...

Here's what they are seeking: ILW.COM seeks full-time administrative associate for our Midtown Manhattan office. We offer a unique opportunity to work in a fast growing small law publishing company which operates one of the most important immigration law websites in the world...

IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: PRAVEEN CHAUDHARI - ENGINEER
Posted on January 31, 2008Dr. Chaudhari is the Indian-born Director-elect of Brookhaven National Laboratory, one of America's premiere government labs. Dr. Chaudhari began his higher education at the famous Indian Institute of Technology and then went on to receive his doctorate at America's great Massachusetts Institute of Technology...
IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: GARY SHTEYNGART - AUTHOR
Posted on January 30, 2008I just finished reading the very funny, somewhat raunchy satirical novel Absurdistan by young Russian-born writer Gary Shteyngart. The novel is about a son of the 1238th richest man in Russia who finds himself in the middle of a manufactured civil war in the former Soviet Republic of Absurdistan...
FAIR: CALL CONGRESS TO DEMAND ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS NOT GET TAX REBATES
Posted on January 30, 2008Um, I guess that means they pay taxes after all. My friend Drew Seman from Immigrants List forwarded a funny little email from Dan Stein at FAIR stating Congress Poised to Give Tax Rebates to Illegal Aliens Call Your Senators Now! The economic stimulus package traveling through Congress right now does nothing to stop the IRS from issuing rebate checks to illegal aliens...

FROM GREEN CARD TO SAG CARD
Posted on January 30, 2008The Associated Press has an interesting article on Heath Ledger's path to permanent residency as an illustration of how the artist immigration process works. I do a lot of work in entertainment and sports and have put up a portal on my web site if you're interested in the subject.
IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: FRED KAVLI - INVENTOR
Posted on January 29, 2008Norwegian-born Fred Kavli is called by some the next Alfred Nobel. He should inspire those who have tried to get a US visa to pursue their dreams and have not yet succeeded. In 1955, Kavli was denied a US visa for lack of having a job lined up for him after he graduated from university in his native Norway...
IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: JOHN OLIVER - FAKE JOURNALIST
Posted on January 29, 2008And rounding out my salute to The Daily Show is, of course, John Oliver. Aside from being one of TDS' regular correspondents, Oliver brought us closed captioning at BBC America. As Oliver notes, "Not even British people can follow the British accent 100 percent of the time...
DEATH BLOW FOR ANTI-IMMIGRATION MOVEMENT?
Posted on January 29, 2008When the history of the current anti-immigration movement in the country is written, January 29th may be seen as a turning point in their fortunes. John McCain, one of the most pro-immigrant politicians in America today (in either party), has moved out ahead of the competition with a clear win in the Florida primary, a state that only allows registered Republicans to participate in their GOP primary...
