Blawg of the Day - Emergency Business Litigation

Posted on March 18, 2010
I don't like to feature blogs that haven't posted in awhile, but the topic of Emergency Business Litigation is so interesting that I'm hoping to compel the author to ramp up his posting by giving him a shout-out. Thomas Patterson, of The Patterson Law Firm in Chicago, wrote the book on temporary restraining orders and preliminary injunctions - really, he did. Handling the Business Emergency: Temporary Restraining ORders and Preliminary Injunctions is available from ABA Books. Hopefully he'll continue this conversation on his blog.

New Title, Same Great Content

Posted on March 09, 2010
It's hard to believe that I've been publishing the Internet Legal Research Weekly for 10 years. The newsletter started out as a way for lawyers and other Internet researchers to learn more about helpful websites and use the Internet to conduct research. Over the past few years, though, the newsletter has expanded to a number of legal technology topics, so much that I don't think the title "Internet Legal Research Weekly" makes sense. So, it was time for a change. I polled my subscribers for new title suggestions, and I received some thoughtful and really creative responses. In the end, I took the recommendation of a family member, who thought I should give the newsletter a more personal brand. So that's what I did. To understand the new title, you have to know more about my name...

Social Media and Privacy

Posted on March 08, 2010
I imagine that many of you who read this blog are already engaging in social media - Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are just a few of the ways lawyers and others are connecting and sharing online - and some of you are diving in, shall we say, "whole hog." When you do this, are you paying attention to the privacy implications of more and more sharing online? Dennis Kennedy and I have been thinking a lot of about this, and our latest Kennedy-Mighell Report podcast addresses these issues. Titled Social Media Common Sense, we take a practical look at the things you need to think about when using social networking and other online services, and how to maintain your privacy - and your clients', as well.

The Open Source Episode

Posted on February 22, 2010
I'll say right up front that I'm not an expert on open-source and why it's different (and in some cases, better) than its commercial counterpart. But Dennis Kennedy is, so we tackled the issue on the latest episode of The Kennedy-Mighell Report, titled Opening Up to Open Source. Dennis explains the different types of open source software, licensing issues, and we discuss some of the open source products that lawyers might use. I then try to explain Foursquare to Dennis, and why it represents a new, interesting type of location-awareness technology. I'm not sure I was able to persuade him to use it, though. Give the show a listen - we had fun with this one!
