Blawg of the Day - Cyberlaw Cases
Posted on April 30, 2010I'm always a fan of blogs on the intersection of technology and the law, and today's is a good example of that. Cyberlaw Cases provides information on "the top pending cyberlaw cases." It's a group effort from both professors and lawyers alike, including Brian Carver (professor, U.C.-Berkeley), Joe Gratz (lawyer, Durie, Tangri), Aaron Perzanowski (professor, Wayne State), and Jason Schultz (professor, U.C.-Berkeley). In addition to cyberlaw cases, they'll also discuss copyright, trademark, and patent cases that have a significant connection to networked environments or computer software. Make sure you check out the "Top 10 Pending Cases" page, which provides links to case information, as well as a brief synopsis of the status of each case.
Blawg of the Day - PMATips
Posted on April 29, 2010Practice Management Advisors (PMAs) are some of my favorite people - they recognize that lawyers are lacking in education for some of the most important aspects of running a law practice - finance, marketing, technology, and basis management skills. Twenty-one states (and many Canadian provinces) offer some type of practice management assistance - every state should have a practice management program, in my opinion. Many PMAs have their own blog, but PMA Tips appears to be a joint effort of many of them - or not. It's hard to tell who's authoring this blog. Nonetheless, it's a great collection of tips for lawyers, primarily in the area of technology. For useful tips, it would be a good move to subscribe to this blog.
Blawg of the Day - Henderson Valley Eggs
Posted on April 28, 2010Now, you wouldn't expect a blog called Henderson Valley Eggs to be a law-related blog. But there you would be wrong. This is a law librarian blog, characterized as a "themed information collective." The 6 contributing editors are all self-described "spring chicken" full-time law librarians who are writing about law library and related issues. Quirky, yes, but there's good stuff here - I just wish they were posting more often!
Getting Started with Social Media, or Improving Your Presence Online
Posted on April 28, 2010I'm a big fan of Chris Brogan, who along with Julien Smith wrote Trust Agents, a book on using the web to build influence, improve your reputation, and earn trust. He continues that conversation over at his self-titled blog, Chris Brogan. One of my favorite recent posts is titled Social Media Projects You Could Start Today; it's basically a collection of some of his previous articles on getting started using social media. Probably my favorite of the articles is on creating a simple presence framework. It's a simple framework, really - developing a Home Base (your blog, website, wherever you want people to come), Outposts (places where you interact with people, with the hope that they might visit your Home Base to continue the conversation), and Passports (profiles you keep on various online sites, without a lot of participation)...

The Internet as Your Next Operating System
Posted on April 26, 2010At The Kennedy-Mighell Report, we like to keep on top of the latest in technology topics. But our latest podcast was a little bit on the abstract side, even for me. In The Internet Operating System, Dennis and I discuss the idea that with more and more data and computing moving online, the structure is actually coming to resemble an operating system. This post by Tim O'Reilly on The State of the Internet Operating System was the launchpad for our discussion, so give it a read for more information. In any event, I learned a lot from prepping for the podcast, so I hope you learn something, too.

Looks like it's mostly just a release of news stories, with no real input or analysis from K&L Gates lawyers, though.
Blawg of the Day - China-U.S. Trade Law

It was our first video podcast, and it took place at ABA TECHSHOW 2010, the premier legal technology educational conference for lawyers. In the episode Inside ABA TECHSHOW 2010, Dennis and I got to interview some of the great faculty from the show - judges, practice management advisors, and others. If you've ever been wondering what goes on at ABA TECHSHOW, watch this podcast and then join us next year!
Blawg of the Day - First Responder Liability

It's published by Fred Simon of Lexington, Kentucky, who in addition to being a lawyer also serves as a volunteer firefighter - making him uniquely qualified to write on this subject.
Collaboration for Today's Lawyer
Posted on April 12, 2010Wow - I'm way behind in promoting our recent Kennedy-Mighell Report podcasts - so I'll spin all of them out over the next couple of days. Back on March 16, we released Smart Ways to Work Together in 2010, to discuss how lawyers are collaborating with each other a few years after the release of our book The Lawyer's Guide to Collaboration Tools and Technologies. Surprisingly, we're finding that although hundreds of great tools and technologies have been released over the past few years to help lawyers and other legal professionals collaborate with each other, very few of those us are actually using these tools. We discuss the reasons for this, and provide some great tips on getting started using collaboration technologies.
