If you're a fan of music, but don't like instruments, boy, do the Acapellate Opinions have a show for you!  Tomorrow night the law school's best vocalists are putting on a free show in the Caplin Auditorium.  It's the kind of thing you expect at a beer and softball school...

Scalia spoke and there was original understanding

Posted on April 13, 2008
Scalia beat on his chest like a giant gorilla on Thursday.  Other than that we were largely underwhelmed.  He didn't even waterboard anyone.  The "planned" protest never materialized.  The questions were largely good and Scalia was fairly responsive, even to the kid who asked if Hillary could be president since the constitution clearly says "He shall ...

There are BMWs available

Posted on April 13, 2008
From The Rant in the C-ville Weekly this week:Hey you little bastard who broke my driver's side mirror in the law school lot on Thursday.  Why are you picking on a crappy car?  Go vandalize a BMW.  They can afford to fix it.I dunno, maybe they were picking on you and not your car?

Better than the library

If you're looking for something to do today, the 1L tournament is happening right now at Copeley.

He said "duty"

Posted on April 09, 2008
This video is from last year's Cordozo Law Revue and we have to say that what it lacks in laughs it more than makes up for in quality.

The Official Best Restroom in the Law School

Posted on April 09, 2008
More than 100 people have voted in our poll from last week and we can now declare the Library Second Floor Private Restrooms to be THE OFFICIAL BEST RESTROOM IN THE LAW SCHOOL!  Reached for comment, the toilet said, "This is really an honor, but I can't stress enough how important the courtesy flush is...

The Charlottesville Paradox

The quality of the weather is inversely related to distance in time from exams.

Softball weekend

Posted on April 08, 2008
The gods smiled on UVA for at least Saturday and softball weekend was a blast.  We weren't really in a state to take notes, but here's a little of what happened.Friday's games were only a half-hour each and we saw some decent play.  For the most part, UVA's teams started strong and looked good against good teams...

The Musical Stylings of George Cohen

Posted on April 04, 2008
BLOTUS committed a bit of piracy at this year's Libel Show and snagged the video for two of the songs from Professor Response. First, the classic disco hit, "At U-V-A."And then things got really sappy with "We'll Miss You" and an impromptu goodbye to Dean Jeffries...

Scatalogical Polling

Posted on April 04, 2008
As promised we've compiled a list of the most popular bathrooms in the law school and want to crown a winner. After the jump you'll find some testimonials and the poll.

Go to The Park

Posted on April 04, 2008
Who knows if anyone is reading this at 630p on a Friday, but the sun is out and the first games of the UVA Softball Invitational are about to start.  Head over to the Park (down by the blue lot) to check out the action.  Here's the updated schedule for tonight's UVA games:730p: UVA Blue v...

No guts no glory

Posted on April 03, 2008
Softball Tournament weekend is a lot like journal tryout weekend.  Except it's the exact opposite.  All we did last year was walk around and watch games while drinking Pepsi and eating sunflower seeds.  It was glorious.  It's pretty cool to watch some of the best men's and co-rec teams play because they're actually good...

Big deal to arrive at law school

Posted on April 03, 2008
Justice Scalia is going to be speaking here next week and all we had to do to get him was give him a medal.  A former UVA law professor, this will be his second appearance at the law school this semester if you include the video opener to the Libel Show...

Toilet time

Posted on April 03, 2008
So we're designating this week Toilet Week.  We want to answer such age old questions as, Why aren't there any women's restrooms in Withers Brown? and Why do all the toilet stalls have the fold in the center so that people can look in the stall and see you?  Most importantly we want to crown the best toilet in the law school...

Life Love Light, or the opposite of law school

Posted on April 03, 2008
We never got around to posting this last year, but it's a tattoo of the subsection symbol that a 1L got last year.  Maybe it was because we only had this blurry photo.  The tattoo actually meant something serious, but incorporated the law school element of the subsection tattoo...

New Jersey v. Delaware

Posted on April 01, 2008
The Supreme Court barely managed to stop an imminent invasion of New Jersey by Delaware.  In a 6-2 decision the Court said Delaware can block a LNG plant that was going to be built on the Jersey side of the Delaware River.  This case is far more awesome than it sounds...

Free Mike Hitsky

Posted on April 01, 2008
If you're not a basketball fan then you probably don't read Free Darko, which is an excellent but very quirky basketball blog.  It's immensely popular in the sports blog world.  We have no idea, then, why their current top post features Mike Hitsky, a reindeer and one of the many people who met Mike Hitsky at the 2007 Feb Club smash party, "Meet My Roommate: Mike Hitsky...

In other UVA blogs

Posted on April 01, 2008
While we were slacking on the blog, the rest of the UVA blogosphere has had things to to say.  Well, sort of.Musings has two interesting finds: Chipotle goes local and a pro se murder defendant wins his case.  (Items 2 and 3). BLOTUS was sad to see Virginia basketball end...

Hey Hey Hey Hey

Posted on April 01, 2008
In case you're the one person who hasn't been listening to Vampire Weekend's Afro-pop, here's the video for A-Punk. It's pretty rad.Speaking of music, old school ska-band The Pietasters are playing Satellite Ballroom on Friday. Given that every law school bar will be stuffed with softball dudes from other law schools, this is a very tempting option.

Are your boys comfortable?

Posted on April 01, 2008
So we're walking down Withers Brown on our way to Scott Commons when we pass the phone next to the vending machines.  Of course some random dude is talking on it, but this guy had his hand down his pants.  It looked like his hand was inside his underwear and at the very least he was keeping his junk company...

Writing lessons from Scalia

Posted on April 01, 2008
Speaking of Slate, they recently launched a new legal blog called Convictions (get it?), which is pretty good.  Slate is turning into a bunch of blogs anyway, but this one manages not to be totally boring. This link in particular is pretty cool.  Bryan Garner sat down with eight of the Supreme Court's justices (Souter was busy watching TV we think) and talked about legal writing...

Ryan was above average even by Lake Wobegon standards

Posted on April 01, 2008
Anyone interested in education policy and/or the No Child Left Behind act would do well to read Jim Ryan's piece in Slate.  Much like his Con Law lectures it's filled with insightful analysis and his own brand of dry wit.  Math and science teachers are in short supply, and there aren't enough good teachers in high-poverty and high-minority schools...

Lile Finals

Posted on March 30, 2008
The 2008 Lile Moot Court competition finished up this afternoon, with Mike Hollander and Becky Mroz taking first place, $2,700 grand each and the coolest part: getting their names inscribed on the Moot Court wall.  They're well on their way to becoming senators from Massachusetts...

Worst news ever

Posted on March 26, 2008
According to the WSJ, 2008 Summer Associates May Have to Work for Offer!  This is basically the worst news ever.  Instead of racking up outrageous bartabs of Cristal and hitting the links every Friday, we're going to be expected to do quality work and write interesting, informative memos while maintaining an appropriate office decorum?  NOOOOOOO!!!!!!2008 Summer Associates may have to Work for Offer (WSJ Law Blog)

We're still in the Top 11!

Posted on March 26, 2008
The US News Law School Rankings have been leaked and the good news is we can now say we're 9th.  On the plus side, we're no longer tied with Duke.  On the bad side, instead of being in a two-way tie for 10th we're in a three-way tie for 9th and somehow one of those schools is Northwestern...

We miss you too

Posted on March 24, 2008
You may have noticed a lack of posting going on here.  Last week our life was dominated by The Libel Show, which we hope you enjoyed.  The non-stop stress and sleep-deprivation apparently wore down our immune system enough that we picked up the flu and we are still trying to recover from it...

It's funny, we promise

Posted on March 19, 2008
Libel Show tickets for tonight's show are still available and are being sold until 2 p.m. in HW Hall.  They will also be sold at the door tonight, assuming we don't sell out.  Do it!

Help Bear Stearns!

Posted on March 17, 2008
The IRS released a schedule that shows when you can expect your stimulus package rebate.  They would like you to purchase high-end consumer goods.  We're going to pay back Visa.  Sorry, Government.IRS Releases (TaxProf Blog)

February Club

Posted on March 17, 2008
Our Feb Club correspondent disappeared for a few days, but we managed to track him down.  After coaxing him out of the cave with a banana and some dirty magazines we got him to write down what it's like going to 30 theme parties in a row. Well Feb Club is over and it only took me 15 days to write the recap...
